Janina Pazdan working at an easel beside open garden doors, canvas catching the afternoon sun
The studio

Morning light, open doors,
and a canvas that isn’t finished yet.

The ground is built up and scraped back long before a line is laid down — which is why her horses look like they are surfacing through the panel rather than sitting on it.

About

A classical training,
a Californian light.

Janina Pazdan began studying fine art at fourteen and never really stopped. A decade of classical training led to a Master’s degree in Fine Arts in 1983 — drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture and design, all of it still visible in the way she builds a surface.

Her formative loves were the French moderns — Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec — painters of movement and weather rather than of detail. That inheritance shows: a horse arrives out of a storm, a garden dissolves at the edges, a dancer is only ever half-there.

She works from Orange County, California, where the seascapes and gardens have quietly entered the work. Her most recent series comes from dance — a passion she took up herself, and then took to canvas. After more than forty years, her paintings and drawings hang in private collections across Europe and the United States.

After the Masters

Painted after
the masters

Janina paints full-scale interpretations of the paintings that shaped her — by hand, in the sequence the original was made in. A small number are accepted each year.

It should look like it was
lifted off a museum wall.

Forty years of looking has taught Janina not just what the masters painted but how they built it — the ground, the underdrawing, the order of the glazes. Her interpretations are made by hand, at full scale, in the sequence the original was made in. On a wall, at the right distance, people have taken them for the thing itself.

The one difference is the one that matters. Every work is signed in her own name, inscribed on the panel with the painting it follows, and delivered with a certificate stating plainly what it is. She makes them the way a great luthier makes a Stradivarius model: all of the craft, none of the deception.
